The difference between travertine and marble

In Iran, the number of marble mines is much more than travertine mines. Most of Iran's marble mines are located in Lorestan Province, Central Province, Yazd Province, and Khorasan Province, and most of Iran's travertine mines are located in Central Province, Azerbaijan Province, and Isfahan Province.

According to Sangestan Mahallat, the most important difference between travertine and marble is the way these stones are formed. Marble stone is formed from the transformation of limestone under high heat and pressure, but travertine is a sedimentary stone and it is formed from the deposition of minerals on the edge of spa springs and rivers.

Travertine stone has a porous appearance and the veins in it are seen in the form of waves, but marble stone has a smooth surface and the veins in it are seen in different linear forms.

The amount of water absorption in travertine stones is higher than marble stones. Travertine stone is the best option for building facade. Due to its high porosity, travertine has the highest adhesion to mortar.

Marble stones lose their color if they are exposed to sunlight and should not be used in places exposed to sunlight, but travertine stones have good resistance to sunlight.

Marble is generally suitable for interior spaces such as floors, stairs, tables, stone artifacts and decor.

Travertine stone can be cut in two ways, without waves and with waves. One of the most important stages of travertine stone processing is the resin and epoxy process to fill the pores and cavities in this stone.

The amount of pores and porosity of marble stone is much less than that of travertine stone. Marble's resistance to sunlight is low, so in the production process, its surface is covered with UV materials in addition to resin and epoxy.

The price of all kinds of natural stones varies under the influence of various factors such as finishing, quality grading, dimensions and thickness. However, usually the price of travertine stone is lower than the price of marble stone. Of course, among the travertine stones, there may be stones whose prices are higher than some of the marble stones.
