Comparison of granite and travertine

In Iran, the number of granite mines is much more than travertine mines. Most of Iran's granite mines are located in Azarbaijan, Zanjan, Isfahan and Khorasan provinces, and most of Iran's travertine mines are located in Central, Azarbaijan and Isfahan provinces.

According to Sangestan Mahallat, travertines are hard and porous stones that are composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). These stones are the result of deposition in hot springs or rivers.

The good resistance, beauty and excellent polishability of travertine stone have made this stone to be used more in building facades. The holes in this stone, in addition to creating heat and sound insulation in this stone, make the cement penetrate better and increase its adhesive properties.

Travertine does not absorb heat and its surface is always cold. This stone has high cutting and polishing capabilities. The color of this stone is stable and does not fade over time.

Granite is an igneous rock. This stone is one of the hardest natural stones and is the best option for use in buildings that are built in unusual weather conditions. This stone is composed of feldspar, mica and other minerals. The colors and high density of granite have made it an ideal stone. This stone is one of the impervious stones and does not crack under pressure and impact. The strength of granite stone is so much that it is placed after diamond in terms of hardness.

Unlike travertine, granite is very compact. If this stone is installed correctly, it becomes a lifelong stone and helps to increase the life of the building.

Granite stone has low water absorption and is impervious to pollution and dust. The resistance of this stone is high against acid and chemical substances and its color is not lost due to contact with chemicals. Granite has high resistance to heat and fire.

Compared to travertine, granite has two major disadvantages; First, this stone is not a thermal and sound insulator, and as a result, it leads to energy wastage in the building, and second, the adhesion of granite stone is not as good as travertine stone.

Travertines have good resistance to cold, heat, UV rays, sunlight and humidity. Of course, most granites also have these characteristics, but in some cases, air humidity may oxidize the iron minerals in the granite stone and make the stone look ugly.
